02.3Artisan Producers

Small-scale production. Practitioner control.

An Artisan Producer is an individual or enterprise engaged in small-scale production, within field-specific scale or volume limits, while retaining demonstrable practitioner involvement and control at one or more consequential stages of production.

Practitioner control shapes the work.

An artisan enterprise may use digital tools, specialist machinery or outside processing. Small volume or the use of ‘artisanal’ language does not, by itself, establish craftsmanship; the production record must show where practitioner judgement remains consequential.

Field-specific thresholds matter because a viable scale for cloth, furniture, ceramics, jewellery or specialist food is not the same.
